Fractional HR · small to mid-market

Senior HR for companies that are not ready for a department.

I’m John Singleton, SHRM-CP. I take the people work off the owner’s desk — hiring, handbooks, hard conversations, and compliance — for companies of about 15 to 80 people. Sixteen years in senior HR. No full-time director required.

Based in Waxahachie. Working with small and mid-market businesses across the US by phone and video.

If this is you

Sound familiar?

“I’m the owner, and I’m also the HR department.”

I take that seat so you can get back to running the company.

“My office manager is buried in HR on top of her real job.”

I take the HR pile off her desk and leave her the job she was hired for.

“We don’t have a handbook, or ours is years out of date.”

I write one that sounds like you, then keep it current.

“I have a tough employee conversation coming and I don’t want to get it wrong.”

We talk it through first. You go in clear on what to say.

“We’re hiring and don’t have a real process for interviews, offers or onboarding.”

I put a simple process in place so the next hire isn’t a scramble.

“We grew fast and nobody owns HR.”

I own it. Monthly, or only when you need me.

“I’m not sure we’re handling time off, hours or write-ups the right way.”

I look at how you do it now and tell you what to change.

How I think

Every business problem has a people angle.

You’re too close to see it — that’s not a criticism. My job is to see what you can’t, think alongside you, and make sure the people side of every decision is covered.

Your Senior HR Confidante

You can’t talk to your employees about your employees. I’m the senior HR partner you talk to first — before the decision, not after.

Your Expert Researcher

What’s competitive pay for the role? Is that contractor arrangement a problem? I research so you don’t have to guess.

Your Strategic HR Thinker

You’re scaling revenue. That’s also a people decision. I help you see workforce implications before they become problems.

Your HR Safety Net

One bad hire can destroy your culture. One compliance gap can become a lawsuit. I build the infrastructure before you need it.

“Small companies think HR is for later. The ones that win bring it in early.”

Who this is for

You don’t need entry-level HR. You need someone who’s seen it all.

You’re small to midsized

Too small for a full-time HR hire, too exposed to go without. Every hire is critical.

You’re expanding — or already elsewhere

Based in Waxahachie. In person around Dallas–Fort Worth when it helps. The same senior HR by phone and video anywhere in the US.

You’re ‘doing HR yourself’

Googling employment questions at midnight. Not sure about that contractor. Handbook still on the list.

You don’t think you need senior HR yet

That’s actually the best time. Not to build a department — to put the people side in place before you need it.

Proof

Trusted by growing businesses.

I work with owner-led companies that grew past “we’ll figure HR out later.” Recent work includes a site-work construction company, a family-owned furniture retailer, and a fine arts academy. Names stay off this page until they say I can use them.

FAQ

Questions owners actually ask

Are you an HR consultant or a fractional HR firm?
Both. John is an HR consultant. Fractional HR is how most owners hire that seat — a set number of hours a month, not a full-time director. Same person. Same senior work.
Do you only work in Dallas?
No. John is based in Texas (Dallas–Fort Worth area) and will sit in person in DFW when it helps. He works with owners across Texas and virtually anywhere in the United States.
What is fractional HR?
Senior HR for a set number of hours a month — not a full-time hire, not a call-center. You get a person who already knows the work: hiring, employee relations, Texas compliance, and a quiet place to talk through people decisions.
Who is this for?
Owners who are too small for a full-time HR director and too exposed to keep Googling it at night. Typical shops are about 15–80 people. Texas is home base. Virtual work is nationwide.
Do you only work in Dallas–Fort Worth?
No. DFW is home base, and in-person meetings happen there when they help. Houston, Austin, Waco, and the rest of Texas are regular work. Owners anywhere in the U.S. work with John virtually — same senior seat, no flight required.
How is this different from payroll or a PEPM HR platform?
Payroll runs pay. A platform stores files. Neither one sits with you before a hard conversation, writes the lane so two people stop colliding, or tells you whether that contractor setup is actually a problem. That is the work.
What does it cost?
Month-to-month. Sounding Board starts at $1,500 a month for about ten hours. Project work can be hourly. No long-term contract. You should feel the fit in the first month.
Is this legal advice?
No. Quick HR is HR counsel in the practical sense — process, people, and Texas employer practice. For a legal opinion, you still want an employment attorney. We work alongside that, not instead of it.
